First, the free stuff (two minutes, no tools)
1. Check the lock button. Most wall consoles have a lock or “vacation” button that disables every remote. If the wall button opens the door but no remote will, someone leaned on the lock. Hold it a few seconds to clear.
2. Look at the trolley. Glance up at the rail over the door. See a red cord hanging from a carriage that isn’t hooked into the rail’s catch? The opener is disconnected from the door - it happens whenever someone pulls the release cord, which around here usually means “after the last power blink.” With the door all the way down, pull the cord toward the door to re-engage, then run the opener; it clicks back in on the next pass. 3. Swap the remote battery. Obvious, skipped constantly. If the wall button works and one remote doesn’t, it’s the coin cell. If no remote works but the wall button does, revisit step 1.
4. Confirm the opener has power. The outlet on the ceiling is often on a GFCI circuit shared with the garage plugs - a tripped GFCI by the door kills the opener silently. Press reset on any garage or exterior outlet with a button.
Next, the almost-free stuff
5. Check the safety eyes. Two little sensors near the floor on each side of the opening. If their lights are off or blinking, they’re not seeing each other - nudge them until both glow steady and clear anything leaning between them. Misaligned eyes usually block closing, but wiring damage can take everything down; if the lights won’t come on at all, the wire has probably been caught by something (or chewed - mice love garage walls in the fall out here).
6. Listen to what the opener does. Press the button and pay attention:

The one that isn’t free: the bang
If you heard a single loud bang from the garage recently - a lot of folks think a shelf fell over - and now the door is impossibly heavy and the opener strains and gives up, stop. That’s a snapped torsion spring, the door’s actual lifting muscle. It is not an opener problem and it is absolutely not a do-it-yourself fix; a wound spring stores enough energy to put you in the ER, which is why we wrote a whole guide on why not to try it.
Look above the door: a torsion spring with a visible gap in its coil is a confirmed break. Leave the door down, unplug the opener so nobody fights it from a car remote, and call us about spring replacement - it’s a same-day job most days, with the price in writing first.
When the list runs out
If you’ve been through all six steps and the door still won’t move, the remaining suspects (logic board, snapped cable, seized bearing plate, bent track) all want a trained pair of eyes.
